ルイジアナ州モンローで生まれ育ったマンタン・モアランドは、12歳の時に家出してサーカスに入る。その後に薬売りのショーに移り、そしてヴォードヴィルに入る。ブロードウェイにも出演し、ヨーロッパ公演もしている。 20代となった1930年代にハリウッドに移り、映画に出演するようになった。ブラックアメリカン映画の大作「The Green Pastures」にも脇役だが参加し、当時大人気だった黒人スターハーブ・ジェフリーズのウエスタン映画にも出演している。彼の名前が売れたのは、当時大人気だったコメディアンのチャーリー・チェンの映画で運転手バーミングハム・ブラウンを演じるようになってからである。それらの映画では、ステレオタイプを助長するような迷信深い怖がりの男を演じていた。その一方で60年代に入ると、ビル・コスビーやゴッドフリー・ケンブリッジ等の黒人コメディアンと親交を深めて、彼等の作品に出演したりしている。 1973年に71歳で脳出血で亡くなるまでに100本以上の映画に出演していた。
