1884年イリノイ州メトロポリスで、13人兄弟の末息子として生まれたオスカー・ミショーは、青年期の頃はあまり知られておらず、 17歳にして家を飛び出し、メトロポリスを離れ、シカゴに移ってプルマン・ポーターとして働き始めた。その頃に、教育者であるブッカー・T・ワシントンの「経済的利点を獲得するために、白人と上手くやる事」というのに感銘を受けた。 1905年に、160エーカーの土地を２つ、サウス・ダコタに手に入れたが、ミショーはそれまで農業の経験が無かったが、ホームステッダー（自作農業者）として働き始めた。 1913年には、その農業経験を「The Conquest: The Story of a Negro Pioneer」というタイトルで一冊の本にする。 1915年にミショーは、経済的理由により土地を失い、アイオワ州に移り「The Western book and Supply Company」を設立する。ミショーは「The Conquest」を1917年に「The Homesteader」として、また書き直した。ミショーは白人農家や実業家に出向き、自分の会社の共有権を売り、そこで雇われている黒人に本を売り歩いたという。その頃に「The Homesteader」を読んだ「The Lincoln Motion Picture Company」のジョージ・ジョンソンが、自社の経営が困難になり悩み、「The Homesteader」を映画化する事を思いつき、ミショーに話しを持ちかけたが、実の兄弟のノベルにも反対された。反対された理由は「ミショー自身が監督する事が条件」だったからだ。ミショー自身は、それで自分の小説を映画化出来る事を知り、1918年に「The Micheaux Film and Book Company」をシカゴで設立する。映画化への資金作りは、「The Homesteader」の本を売りさばいた方法と同じだった。 1918年にシカゴで製作を開始された「The Homesteader」は、1919年3月に公開された。その売り上げは十分だったようで、すぐに次回作「Within Our Gates」を製作し始める。1920年1月12日に公開されたこの作品は、1919年に「戦後最悪」と言われた各地で起きた暴動のきっかけとなった一つのリンチ事件をテーマにし、センセーショナルとなった。シカゴの市長や警察署長は、この作品を検閲するのを拒んだ。しかし、ミショーはこの作品で今の映画で頻繁に使われている「クロスカッティング」や、「夢の回想シーン」等を取り入れ、映画に緊張感を持たせた。 1929年に始まった世界大恐慌等で、殆どのインディペンデンスで黒人が経営する映画会社が倒産する中で、ミショーの会社だけは、生き延びた。原因の一つに、ポール・ロブソンやエバリン・プリーアー等の大手映画会社で後にスターとなる俳優を輩出したり、すでに有名なボクサーであるサム・ラングフォードを主役に使ったりしたのである。しかし、彼の会社が生き延びた本当の理由は資本を白人に頼っていた事が上げられる。世界が大恐慌時代の中、1929年にミショーは会社を「The Micheaux Film Campany」と変えたが、実際には2人の白人がコントロールしていたという。 1931年に「The Exile」で、初めて黒人監督によるオールトーキー映画を製作した。ミショーは、ニューヨークに訪れた際に、アラン・ロック等の「ハーレム・ルネッサンス」を代表する人物にも会っていたようで、幼少時代をハーレム・ルネッサンス時代に過ごした、現映画監督ウィリアム・グリーブスは、当時の事をこう語る。「映画監督のオスカー・ミショーがバーやグリル店に、カバンを持って現れて、そこにプロジェクターをセットして、自分の映画を公開し始めるんだ。」「リンチ」や「異人種間恋愛」、「レイプ」、「ギャンブル」等の、白人映画ではタブーとされる映画を製作し続けた、ミショーは1948年の「The Betrayal」まで、約40本の映画を作り続けた。その後は、また作家活動をしたが、「The Betrayal」の3年後の1951年に他界した。 1986年には、「全米監督組合賞」の「Golden Jubilee Special Award」に輝き、翌年には有名な「Walk Of Fame」にも彼の名前が刻み込まれた。
