カンザスで生まれたサム・マクダニエルは、デンバーのミンストレル・ショーでダンサーとして出演していた。父がマネージメントをしていたミンストレルに兄と出演するようになり、その後に妹のエタと共にトーキー時代となっていたハリウッドに移った。数多くの作品にクレジット無しで当時黒人に与えられていた役であるポーターやバトラー等の小さな役にありついた。ロサンジェルスのラジオ番組に出演するようになり、その番組から彼のニックネームDeaconがつくようになった。その頃に、もう1人の妹であるハティ・マクダニエルにハリウッドに来るように進め、ラジオやナイトクラブシンガーの仕事を紹介している。
