両親はNiaが２歳になる前に離婚して、母について、母が通う大学があるアイオアに引っ越しをした。Niaが７歳の時に、サウスセントラルに引っ越し、カトリック学校で、バレーやタップ、ジャズダンスや体操、ギターなどの勉強をしていた。母は２つも学位があるにもかかわらず、その時期は職がなく、勉強していたArtの仕事は見つからずに、低賃金の仕事を何でもした。それが、Niaへの活力となった。レジーナ・キングも教えていた、俳優トッド・ブリッジスの母のベティが演技の指導を15年にも渡り、指導した。
