彼が映画デビューした「A Raisin in the Sun」でもそうだったが、彼はいつも洗練された演技を見せてくれる。そしていつも力強い。そして優しい。「Iron Eagle／アイアンイーグル」や「An Officer and a Gentleman／愛と青春の旅立ち」が、やはり目立つが、私は「Love Songs」の力強い父親や、「Toy Soldiers」の頼れる校長役が目に止まった。

●^● バイオ

ルイス・ゴセット・ジュニアは、NYのブルックリンで電車のポーターの父親とメイドの母親の元に生まれた。バスケットボールの才能のあったゴセットは、NBA選手になる事を夢見ていた。所が、16歳の時にたまたま受けたブロードウェイのオーデションで400人の中から、「Take A Giant Step」の主役の座を射止めた。その賞で「ベスト新人賞」を受賞している。その頃に、ニューヨーク大学のバスケットボールの奨学金を得て、卒業時には、NYニックスからトライアウトキャンプを進められて、参加するも、シドニー・ポワチエが主演のブロードウェイ劇「A Raisin in the Sun」の出演を決めており、NBAは断念し、本格的に俳優を目指すようになった。「A Raisin in the Sun」が映画化された1961年に、映画デビューした。またTVや舞台を続ける傍ら、音楽の道も進み、ドゥワップグループ「The Revileers」に一時期在籍し、レコーディングもしている。 70年代に入ると、ポール・ウィンフィールドやジェームス・アール・ジョーンズ等の名優と共演し、その存在をアピールした。そして1977年に「ルーツ」が始まり、フィドラーを演じたゴセットは、一躍注目を集め、エミー賞を獲得した。 1982年には「愛と青春の旅立ち」で、オスカーの助演男優賞を獲得し、アフリカ系アメリカ人として、20年ぶりのオスカー獲得ともなり、注目を集めた。 1968年の自身が主演の「アイアンイーグル」を成功させ、第4作もシリーズ化された。今も主演・助演・プロデューサーとして活躍している。
