正直、最初の頃はたんなる綺麗な女優だな位にしか思えなかった。けど、「代理人」辺りから、この人やる気だなって思った。かなって思ったら、突然金歯でコメディやってしまったり、フリントストーンになったりと、不思議な所もあるのも彼女の魅力かもしれない。「ブルーワース」、「ホワイ・ドゥ・フールズ・フォール・イン・ラブ」等で起動修正してくれて、「Introducing Dorothy Dandridge」では、本当に素晴らしい演技を披露してくれて、すっかり好きな女優の一人になってしまった。「チョコレート」で、すっかり彼女の虜だ。ただ、役選びを慎重にして欲しいと真剣に願う。

父親がアフロ系アメリカ人で、母親が白人の家に生まれたハレ。名前の由来は生まれ育った、オハイオ州、クリーヴランドの有名な「the Halle Brothers department store」から由来していて、今「The Drew Carey Show」というドラマでも、そこが舞台になっている。両親が４歳の時に離婚して、母方で育てられた。高校時代から、綺麗な容姿で、プロムクイーンに選ばれたり、学級員のような事もしていた。色々なミスコンで賞を貰い、テレビで少しずつ役を貰えるようになった。スパイク・リーが「ジャングル・フィーバー」で、その容姿からは考えられないような役...ジャンキー（麻薬中毒者）の役を演じて映画デビュー。映画「ラストボーイスカウト」でデーモン・ウェイアンズの相手役を演じたあたりから、注目されるようになる。その後は「ブーメラン」や「フリントストーン」等で、引き続き注目を集め、「代理人」あたりから、演技にも好評を得るようになる。「Introducing Dorothy Dandridge」では、ずっと憧れていたダンドリッジを演じ、プロデュースにも参加して、数々の大きな賞を獲得。その制作中に調べていたら、なんとダンドリッジとハレは同郷で、しかも同じ病院で生まれた事を知る。元ニュー・キッズ・オン・ザ・ブロックのメンバーダニー・ウッドや「ホワイ・ドゥ・フールズ・フォール・イン・ラブ」で共演したラレンズ・テイトやシマー・ムーア等の恋愛、プロ野球選手のデビッド・ジャスティスと一時期結婚を経て、現在は、長年婚約していた歌手のエリック・ベネイと晴れて結婚したが、2005年に離婚。そして、等々アフロアメリカン女性と初めて、アカデミー賞の主演女優賞を「チョコレート」で彼女が手にした。
